Generation VI, 1972-1976
The 1972 Thunderbird model year saw a much larger car emerge. It was only available as a two-door hardtop and took on a much more luxurious tone than did earlier Thunderbird models. The base engine was still the 429, but the consumer could also order the Lincoln 460 cubic-inch V8 as an extra cost option. For 1973, the Thunderbird saw small cosmetic changes such as an "egg crate" styled grill and dual headlights grouped individually instead of together. Also available for this year was the opera window, which would become standard equipment on Thunderbirds to come. The 429 cubic-inch engine was still the standard engine for the Thunderbird. The 1974 Thunderbird had little differences from the '73 model. One major difference was changing the standard engine to the 460 cubic-inch Lincoln V8. The 1975 Thunderbird was outfitted with many standard options which made it into a standard luxury car. The 460 cubic-inch engine was still the standard engine. 1976 was the biggest and most luxurious Thunderbird ever. After 1976, the size of the Thunderbird would dwindle and the performance would decrease.
The 460 cubic-inch Lincoln V8 was now the power plant of choice. The 1976 Thunderbird was the biggest and most luxurious Thunderbird ever.
The car is completely original, and in beautiful showroom new, mint condition! It has the optional 460 engine, so that the performance and roadholding, on the special wirerim Thunderbird wheels, is quite exceptional. With all the other options.
As you can see, the red lipstick paintwork is in exceptional new condition for 27 years old. The interior, all in white with real white leather seats, is quite literally new.
Despite its age it drives like new, everything tight, with no rattles or squeaks. The same quick performance, taut roadholding, firm but comfortable ride. Excellent car. It has got to be the most comfortable car I have ever been in. What a car!! It has tons of power, but slow acceleration because of it's weight. It handles amazingly good for a high powered rear-wheel drive car. The car is so huge it could have been used as a tank. I LOVE this car! The huge engine puts out an amazing amount of power. This car is, in my opinion, the ultimate luxury car.
The car is very comfortable and the interior is spacious. I love roof-line and exterior styling. The doors are heavy and must be slammed hard to get the "door ajar" light to go out. The trunk lid, also has to be slammed shut. This car has some power. It's sluggish from 0-20 mph, but after it hits 20 mph it's gone. It has nice tight handling. Has no problem burning a Corvette. This car doesn't look fast at all, and it's slow off the line, but get her out on the highway and she'll pass just about anything out there.
There is so much legroom that I, and I'm pretty tall, can put my feet straight out in front of me without bending my knees. It's safe, I mean, it's a freakin' tank. Plus it won't roll over when you turn, like a Stupid Useless Vehicle (SUV). Overall it is a superb classic American beauty. The car gets looks everywhere I go, and the most noticeable attribute is its length. It's just a few inches longer than a Suburban. It's awesome to drive it.
The engine starts quicker than you can light a match. It doesn't need to be turned for 1 second. 0-60 in about 5 seconds and you can't beat that for a car that has not been altered for speed. Too bad Ford doesn't make cars like this again. Cast iron engines are the way, unlike today's aluminum engines.
